Crane clay target team places 76th at nationals Crane Sports Sports July 25, 2018July 25, 20180 After finishing 10th out of 23 teams at the State Tournament in Hillsboro June 23, 2018, the Crane Union High School clay target team set their eyes to the National Tournament in Mason, Mich., held at the Michigan Trapshooting Association home field with 44 trap fields all lined in a row… together they ran 1.5 miles The Mustangs were in the first tier to be invited. Only teams (all five members) who shot a season average of 19 out of 25 would be the first to be invited to register. Crane made that honor. Levi Roath, Tanner Davis, Johnny Sword, Casey Otley, and Wyatt Lasich were headed to Nationals. All team members also registered for the individual tournament. The tournament began on July 12 with practice and a Lucas Hoge concert. The team flew in early that morning and registered. There were 173 teams registered for the team competition, and 1,331 individual shooters registered for the individual tournament. On Friday, July 13, the Mustangs shot in the championship qualifying round. Only the top 80 teams would advance to the championship round of tournament play. Crane shot 100 clay targets in two 50-target sessions. Their score was 448, placing them in the 76th spot and a chance for a championship trophy. Other Oregon schools that made the top 80 were Hermiston (who was in 1st place at the end of the qualifying round), Canby, and Medford. Crane beat out Newberg and Molalla. On Saturday, July 14, the Mustangs shot in the individual tournament. Out of 100 targets, Davis shot a 95, Roath 90, Sword 86, Otley 79, and Lasich 86. Only Davis made the top 400 to advance to the championship round, placing 240th. Anything lower than a 94 score was out. On Sunday, July 15, the individual championship rounds progressed. Again, Davis shot a 95, giving him a score of 190/200. This placed him 226th overall out of more than 1,300 kids. The team championship round started rough for the Mustangs, who were shooting in hot and humid temperatures. They finished stronger in the second session with a total of 433. Cumulatively, the Mustangs score was 881, placing them in 76th place out of 173 teams. It was a great showing for the little team at Nationals as the competition was fierce! Hermiston ended up placing seventh, Canby 42nd, Medford 59th, Molalla 114th, and Newberg 132nd.
