Summer reading begins at the library

School’s out soon and you may be wondering what to do with the kids this summer. Here is a suggestion and the best part — it’s free!

Bring the kids to Harney County Library throughout June and July when we are once again presenting our summer reading program.

Kids of all ages from birth through high school are welcome to join in the fun this summer. Registration begins Friday, May 31 from 12-4 p.m. at the library. Kids will receive a free t-shirt while supplies last. If you cannot make it to the library on that day, you may email the names, ages, shirt size, and phone number of your children to kidsread@harneycountylibrary.org or register online at www.harneycountylibrary.org/summer or call the library, 541-573-6670.

We have a great schedule of programs following our theme this year: Read, Renew, Repeat.

Discover juggling and magical ventriloquism with our special performers. Older kids will even get to learn how to do magic tricks. Celebrate Smokey Bear’s 80th birthday. Journey under the sea with UO Museum of Natural and Cultural History. Get the wiggles out with some dancing and lively music. There’s going to be so much to do! Pick up a schedule at the library or check us out online.

Reading, of course, is a very important part of the Harney County Library Summer Reading Program. There will be weekly drawings for prizes for all readers who keep track of their reading time and grand prizes for top readers in age categories.

Studies show that students who participate in public library summer reading programs score higher on reading achievement tests at the beginning of the next school year. They increase their enjoyment of reading and are more motivated to read. So when you sign your child up for the summer reading program, tell them how much fun they’re going to have but smile to yourself knowing the benefits of summer reading are good for both of you.
