An elk emerges from a magic doorway Arts and Entertainment October 5, 2022October 5, 20220 Submitted photos From L-R: Photos of the building on East Washington Street before, during, and after it was painted by muralist Andrea Grigg. In autumn of 2021, the Frontier Art Center and Arts and Crafts Association created a mural competition. They put out a “Call to Artists” for designs to paint on the wall of the building on East Washington Street in downtown Burns. There was a plastered-over doorway that they asked the artists to transform. Andrea Grigg’s drawing of an elk emerging from the trees through the doorway was the first-place winner. Grigg began painting when weather permitted in the spring. After months of hard work, she has now completed her masterpiece. Using small brushes and mixing a lot of colors, Grigg created a very colorful and detailed mural, from the tall trees and large elk down to the tiny flowers and local butterflies. Regarding her experience, Grigg said, “There are many kind people here who took the time to speak to me and give me encouragement. I also met numerous travelers passing through, including a man from England, a couple from Tasmania, a couple from France, and three friends traveling together from Belgium. All the flora and fauna depicted in the mural are found in Harney County. Most are from reference photos I took at Fish Lake. The elk reference photo came from the Internet, but I gave him a new rack after I took a photo of the elk mounted in Big R. I sincerely hope this little sampling of the natural beauty found in Harney County brings everyone here the joy it brings me. I am very grateful to the Frontier Art Center for giving me the opportunity to paint this mural. The Art Center has helped myself and others grow in our artistic abilities through the many opportunities it provides.”
