2024 Harvest Festival Recap: A Celebration of Community at the Harney County Fairgrounds

On Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024, the Harney County Fairgrounds came alive with the sights, sounds, and flavors of the annual Harvest Festival, hosted by the Harney County Food Systems Group, an initiative of the High Desert Partnerships Biz Harney Collaborative. This year’s festival saw an impressive turnout, showcasing the community’s vibrant spirit and local talent.

Attendees were greeted by over 20 local vendors, offering a diverse array of goods from homemade baked treats to unique crafts created here in Harney County. The festival provided a perfect opportunity for residents to support local businesses and discover the rich talent within the community.

One of the highlights of the day was the petting zoo organized by local 4-H groups, including but not limited to the “Raised in Barn” 4-H group. Families enjoyed the chance to interact with a variety of animals, making it a memorable experience for children and adults alike.

Adding an educational component to the festivities, the Harney County Library of Things had a booth showcasing items available for checkout, including canning equipment. This initiative aims to promote community engagement and resource sharing, making it easier for residents to try their hand at preserving seasonal produce. The OSU Extension also offered a free canning demonstration to anyone interested. Attendees learned valuable techniques for safely preserving their harvest, further enhancing the festival’s focus on local food systems and sustainability.

For those looking to savor the flavors of fall, the festival featured a cider press where attendees could enjoy free apple cider. The delightful aroma of freshly pressed cider filled the air, drawing in visitors eager to sample the seasonal treat. Additionally, children had a blast with the popcorn sheller, where they could shell their own kernels and take home a small bag to enjoy later.

Another crowd favorite was the homemade caramel apples, which disappeared quickly as festival-goers indulged in the sweet treat while children were able to get their faces painted while their parents shopped.

The 2024 Harvest Festival not only celebrated the bounty of the season but also highlighted the strong sense of community that Harney County embodies. With its focus on local vendors and family-friendly activities, the festival served as a reminder of the importance of supporting one another and cherishing the connections that make our community thrive. 268 lbs of food was donated to the Harney Hub from participants at the festival!

As the day came to a close, attendees left with smiles, full bellies, and cherished memories, already looking forward to next year’s celebration. The Harney County Food Systems Group extends their gratitude to all who participated and contributed to making this year’s Harvest Festival a resounding success.
