BHS girls dominate over the weekend Burns Volleyball October 2, 2024October 4, 20240 The Burns volleyball team finished the weekend 3-0, picking up wins on the road against Umatilla, Riverside and McLoughlin. In the first game on Friday, Sept. 27, the Hilanders destroyed the Vikings in straight sets 25-9, 25-9, 25-2. Leading the girls in attacking was Caitlyn Horrell who finished with six kills. Danye Runnels had five kills, Megan Weil added with four, Jocelyn Graham and Akylah Kaino had three and Myah Rothwell had two kills. The Hilanders finished with 32 aces over the three matches with Taylor Trent and Graham leading the way with eight aces each. Bailey Templed added with six aces, while Chloe and Myah Rothwell had four aces and Kaino finished with two. Horrell finished the day with two blocks while M. Rothwell had one. Kaino led the team with six digs, Graham finished with five, Trent and Weil had two and M. Rothwell had one. C. Rothwell had 11 of the 21 assists, while Trent had seven assists, Temple with two and M. Rothwell had one. In their second game of the day, the Hilanders made quick work of the Riverside Pirates, taking them down in straight sets 25-14, 26-24, 25-12. Kaino led the team in attacking, finishing with 13 of the team’s 35 kills. Horrell picked up eight kills, M. Rothwell had five, Graham ended the day with four, Weil had three, while C. Rothwell and Runnels each had one. Trent led the girls in serving, finishing with eight aces. Temple had seven aces, Amaya Ballard and Graham each finished with two aces, while C. Rothwell, M. Rothwell and Kaino each had one. Horrell led the team in blocking with two blocks. Temple finished with seven digs, while Graham had four, Kaino had two and C. Rothwell and M. Rothwell each had one. C. Rothwell led the team with 17 assists while Trent had 13 assists. The team got back to work the next day on Saturday, Sept. 28, beating the Mac-Hi Pioneers in straight sets 25-14, 25-8, 25-12. Kaino led in attacking with 15 kills. Horrell picked up nine kills, while M. Rothwell had three, Graham with two and Runnels and Weil finished with one. Horrell finished with eight aces, Kaino picked up seven, Graham finished with six, and Trent and Temple each had one ace. Horrell also led in blocking as well with two blocks. Graham and Weil each added with one block. Temple led the team with six digs. C. Rothwell and Kaino finished with four digs apiece, Horrell had three, Trent had one and Hayley Smith had one dig. C. Rothwell led the team in ball handling with 20 assists. Trent finished with eight and Horrell had two. The girls are sitting at No. 6 in the OSAA 3A rankings at 16-3 overall and 5-0 in league play. They traveled to Grant Union (6-10, 1-2) on Tuesday, Oct. 1 for a non-league match-up. Scores and stats were unavailable at press time. BHS will host the Nyssa Bulldogs (5-14, 3-1) on Thursday, Oct. 3 with the first serve set for 6 p.m. They’ll finish off the week with a trip to Pleasant Hill for the Pleasant Hill Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 5.
