Hilanders down Honkers 39-0 at Corbett Memorial Field

The Burns Hilander football team held the visiting Lakeview Honkers scoreless in a 39-0 rout at Corbett Memorial Field on Friday, Sept. 20.

After a 7-0 first quarter lead, the Hilanders blew open the game with three touchdowns in the second quarter for a 25-0 halftime lead.

Midway through the third quarter, Burns added two more touchdowns and enacted the running clock for the rest of the game.

Coach Matt Bruck said after the game, “We played very well and put our third shutout in the last three weeks.” He goes on to say, “I’m incredibly proud of our guys and the way that they have made improvements through the weeks. We still have a lot we can work on, especially cleaning up the penalties.” The Hilanders accrued eight penalties on the night for 80 yards. 

Defensively, Burns shut down Lakeview’s offense, allowing 51 total yards on offense. Coltin Miller and Easton Kemper led the Hilanders with an interception and Joe Weil blocked a punt. Bruck said, “Our defense has been playing very fast and physical, and our offense is finding balance and consistency which we will need moving forward.”

Jack Wright went 11 of 24 passing for 157 yards and a touchdown. Canon Winn caught three of those passes for 59 yards and the score.

Kale Cornell gets around the edge.

Kemper rushed six times for 51 yards and a touchdown. Tommy Winn carried the ball nine times for 43 yards and two touchdowns, while Kale Cornell had six carries for 27 yards and a touchdown. The Hilanders amassed 280 yards of total offense.

“We have a bye week this week, after which we play Vale, at Vale. We are excited and looking forward to that game a lot, and know that it will be a great test of how far we have come as a team,” said Bruck.

Burns is currently 4-0 on the season with the No. 1 ranked spot in the OSAA rankings. They play at No. 6 Vale (4-0) on Friday, Oct. 4 with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. (MT).
