Shirley Smith Moore 1952-2024 Obituary June 26, 2024June 26, 20240 Shirley Smith Moore, beloved mother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend passed away at her home in Prineville, on Feb. 7, 2024 with her family by her side. Shirley was born in Burns, to Ulysses and Kitty Smith of Crane. She was the youngest of ten children and the only child to be born in Oregon. Shirley attended school in Crane from 1st grade through 12th where she graduated as the Valedictorian. During her school years she was active in volleyball, the school newspaper and the drill and dance teams. After high school Shirley attended college in Eugene where she met her husband, Arnold Moore. They grew their family by one with the arrival of their son, Les, and moved to Texas during the boom of the early 1980’s. Shirley started working in a newspaper office which she continued to do in other cities where they lived. The family returned to Oregon and made their life in Springfield until Les graduated from high school. Shirley and Arnold decided to start traveling around the US to work in different places. They were able to see and live in a lot of beautiful places around the country. During this time Shirley made friends wherever she went. She loved thrift and antique stores and as an avid reader she spent many hours in old bookstores. When Arnold and Shirley decided it was time to settle down, they moved back to Crane. Shirley was happiest being back in her hometown with family around. Unfortunately, later in life, health issues forced her to relocate to Central Oregon for medical treatments. Shirley had a beautiful soul and it was so evident in many ways. She was a prayer warrior and the hub of her family. Shirley kept in contact with everyone, which was quite the task with a family that is spread all over the country. She also kept her friends close in her heart treasuring old and new ones. Shirley was also very creative and a beautiful writer. She penned many poems and stories throughout her life, many of them about her beloved horses. Shirley was a natural horsewoman and broke and trained her own horses and those of other families in the area. She spent many hours riding her horses around Harney County with friends and family. Shirley loved all animals and wherever she was she always had a dog or two by her side and a cat in her lap. If she couldn’t have those, she had a bird or rabbits and sometimes all at the same time. Shirley was a Christian that led by example. She believed in the best of people and never had a bad word for anyone. She had a beautiful voice and sang with her siblings and at church whenever she could. She was always interested in whatever was going on around her and was an excellent conversationalist. Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Ulysses and Kitty Smith; her husband, Arnold Moore; her siblings, Kelen Flynn, Troy Smith, Keith Smith, Phyllis Knight, Kenneth Smith, Carolyn Goodman, and Grant Smith as well as other family members. Shirley is survived by her son, Les (Mary); her grandchildren, Natalie and Marissa; her sister, Beulah Rossberg; brother, Charles Smith (Sherry); as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
