Darrell Northrup 1940 – 2024 Obituary May 29, 2024May 29, 20240 Darrell Northrup passed away at his home in Hines surrounded by family on May 19, 2024 at the age of 84. He was born April 28, 1940 in Caldwell, Idaho to Albert and Erma Northrup. Darrell spent his early years in Idaho, and then moved to Harney County to live with his grandparents in Diamond, where he finished grade school while working on ranches in Diamond. He then went onto Crane High School where he participated in sports graduating in 1958. While attending high school Darrell met his wife Charlotte Moser; they were married on Jan. 2, 1960 in Winnemucca, Nev., enjoying each other’s company in marriage for the next 64 years. After marrying, the couple settled in Drewsey where Darrell went to work for the County Road Department. During their time in Drewsey they grew their family adding children Debbie and Gene. In 1963 Darrell decided to go to diesel mechanics schooling in Ontario. While going to school he worked for Arts Service and Auto body as well as driving the wrecker and ambulance. He enjoyed driving race cars all over the Treasure Valley. Darrell loved diesel mechanics but was always a cowboy at heart and wanted to ranch. In 1965 he moved his family to Denio and began ranching with his brother-in-law Bill Moser. Two years later the family moved 15 miles across the border back into Harney County to Fields, where Darrell and Charlotte spent the next 57 years. For 24 years Darrell lived his Ranching dream, then in 1989 made a transition to owning and operating the Fields Store and Café. They served the public for 15 years making many friends near and far. After selling the store they spent their winters traveling to Arizona where Darrell team roped winning many buckles and a saddle. During the summers they came back to Harney County where Darrell worked on Hay Farms swathing hay and farming. With failing health, Darrell and Charlotte moved to Hines in 2023, where they have resided until Darrell’s passing. Darrell will be deeply missed by those who survive him: his wife, Charlotte; daughter, Debbie (Rod) Otley; son, Gene (Mindy) Northrop; grandchildren, Lisa Otley, Brenda (AJ) Swartzlender, Jesse Northrop (Bailey Coates); great-grandchildren, Wheeler Northrop, Callen Swartzlender; and many extended family as well as the many great friends and neighbors they’ve met over the years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Erma Northrop; sister, Maxine; brother, Duane; grandparents, Harry and Thelma Jones and Rollie and Mabel Northrop. Services will be held Saturday, June 29, 2024 in Drewsey.
