Candace Barr-Moon passed away on Oct. 19, 2023, in Harney County.

She was born in Winnemucca, to Justine and Donald Bar on May 27, 1970. She was raised in McDermitt with her three brothers, Dale, Donald Jr., and Dallas, and two sisters, Justina and Debbie. She graduated high school from the McDermitt combined school in 1988. After graduation, she attended Treasure Valley Community College to become certified as a CNA in 1989. Her son, Brandon Hoodie, was born May 17, 1989 in Ontario.

While being a mother was perhaps her favorite job, she worked many jobs to support her family. In 1990, she worked on a wildfire crew. While fighting a wildfire behind Burns, she decided to move to the small town in Harney County. She eventually ended up being the Director of the Aspens Living Center.

She met her husband, Geren Moon, in 2002, and they later married in 2014 in Reno. They spent their 21-years together working the Moon Ranch between Burns and Valley Falls. They enjoyed many adventures together while working the ranch and taking care of the land. Whether moving cows, haying, fixing fence, cutting trees, or the many other chores that came with the ranching way of life, they always did it side by side. When the ranch work was done, she would go to work taking care of the family and friends she loved. She loved to cook and feed a crew, whether at the dinner table or all the way in town, she always did her best to make sure no one went without. She cared about the many members of her community and did her best to take care of them all.

On days where ranch work could wait a few hours, she enjoyed one of her many hobbies. She loved to garden and would have a plentiful harvest of tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, jalapenos, and many other vegetables. The produce from her garden as well as huckleberries, chokecherries, and wild berries they would find along their adventures, would be canned to save for winter. She spent hours canning, telling Geren it was to prepare for winter, but most of her jars of goods would be given out as gifts to those in the community she held dear.

On the rare occasion that they could slip away from the ranch, they would be found at elk camp or under a shade tree catching fish. It’s unknown if she had her tips/tricks or just all the luck, but she refused to share. It was a rare fishing trip if she didn’t out fish all the people who tagged along. You never saw someone who could eat so many fish. Any deer or elk they brought home would be cut up and prepared for her amazing cooking. She would have Geren busy cutting, wrapping, and making jerky. When all the work was finished, the bounty would be proudly shared with all who stopped by to visit.

Candace is survived by her husband, Geren Moon; son, Brandon Hoodie; grandson, Shonto; mother, Justine Barr; sisters, Justina Paradise and Debbie Barr; stepchildren, Josh Moon, Miranda (Rob) Glick, Jeanne (Tim) Smith, Chrissy (Jacob) Forsmann; step-grandchildren, Ezra Moon, Darin Smith, Trinity and Karma Glick, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Donald Barr; brothers, Dale, Donald Jr., and Dallas Barr; and two infant brothers, Justin and Blain, maternal grandparents, Joseph Sam and Elsie Crutcher Sam; paternal grandparents, Dewey Barr and Marion Brown Barr.

Services for Candace will be held Thursday, Nov. 2, 2023, at the Fort McDermitt Tribal Gym with lunch at 11 a.m., and services to follow at 1 p.m.
