Sandy Volle of Burns was awarded the Oregon Substitute Teacher of the Year.

Volle is a veteran teacher with a diverse background in education. She was a full-time teacher and coach in Idaho for 11 years. After moving to Harney County, she substituted intermittently. During this time, she taught full-time at Hines Middle School for one year, then became a Special Education Life Skills teacher for 17 years, including three years at Burns High School.

Since 2016, Volle has been substituting in a variety of situations. In 2022, she was asked to teach full-time as a substitute for the entire year. She taught one kindergartner, one first grader, and two third graders at Suntex Elementary in Riley.

Teaching in rural Oregon differs from teaching in large urban districts. In Harney County rural school districts, all schools are K-8, with anywhere from two to 18 students. Volle experienced the learning curve of teaching the curriculum for multiple grades and subject areas.

Her love of kids of all ages is evident; she always develops unique connections with her students. She has always preferred older students, but gained a huge respect for elementary teachers, especially those teaching multiple grades, following her substituting experiences.

After witnessing Volle’s adaptability and personability, Harney Education Service District (ESD) Superintendent Shanon Criss described her as “an amazing person.”

Volle believes students need to see their substitutes as real people. She has always had the ability to engage students, by having conversations the first time she substitutes in a new school or classroom, so she can reveal her character and personality. She talks with them on their level, creating a positive rapport and even showing her vulnerability. These rewarding connections have continued throughout the years.

Volle is also an active member in the community. She’s currently a Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteer, active in her church, and serves on the Harney ESD Board of Directors. Her passion and dedication are inspiring!
