Roy Lee Travis 1927 – 2023

Roy Lee Travis, 95, passed away Sunday, July 30, 2023. Roy was born the oldest of nine children to Evertt and Glenice Travis in Riverton, Wyo., on August 17, 1927. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Faye Travis; and their five children; 13grandchildren; and many loved great-grandkids.

As a young child, his family moved from Wyoming to Council, Idaho then finally to Oregon. He is survived by two brothers, John Travis, Mike Travis; and one sister, Audrey Bryant.

Roy left home at the young age of 13, and began working on various ranches and farms. He joined the Army and served four years during World War II. He was awarded several Medals of Honor while serving his country. After leaving the Army, he joined the Rodeo Circuit, riding both saddle bronc and bulls. He later became one of the best rodeo judges in the country, cowboys all round loved how fair and just he was. He was named in the Rankin Crow book as being one of the best Rodeo Judges in rodeo history. 

In September 1951, he came to Burns for the rodeo, while there he met the love of his life Faye Evans. They married the same year in December in a double ceremony with her sister, Thelma Evans and Max Vaughan, in Winnemucca, Nev. Roy and Faye lived in several areas in Oregon while raising their five kids and eventually settled in Burns. 

Roy worked in construction until starting his own fencing company. He built beautiful fences for both local landowners and government agencies earning a reputation for having the straightest fences in Oregon. In the early years of his fencing company his wife and kids helped, his wife continued to help when she could.

Roy loved to attend all the grandkids football and basketball games. He never missed a Crane football or basketball game. He loved to support the kids and was proud of his son, Stub Travis who coached both teams for nearly 30-years. He went to fair every year and watched his grandkids show their 4-H animals, and while he didn’t show much emotion publicly, he would have tears of pride while watching his kids and grandkids.

One of the things he enjoyed over many years was fishing in the ocean with his brothers. He had his own boat and would try to go at least once a year. He was an avid gardener and could grow anything. He kept Faye busy all summer canning all the fruits and vegetables he grew in their garden. He was always busy and enjoyed an active life with his family.

He leaves behind his wife, Faye; daughter, Bonnie Kelley, husband, Jim and grandkids, Joe Arnold, Bridgit Starbuck, Chett Smith and Will Kelley; son, Stub Travis, wife, Laurie and granddaughter, Dusty Travis; daughter, Mary (Sas), husband, Bob and grandkids, Mick Miller, Mandi Dowell and Codi Lehman; daughter, Janet, and husband, Pete, grandkids, Karli Arnold and Chase Arnold; daughter, Glennie, and husband, Bob, grandkids, Jody Starbuck, Jaime Edmundson and Caleb Cargill; numerous great-grandkids, nieces and nephews. He was loved by his family and will be greatly missed.
