On Sunday, Feb. 19, we left for runDisney, which is held at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla. I could feel myself getting nervous, but I knew I had trained hard for this experience.

On Thursday morning (Feb. 23), we went to the ESPN expo to pick up my race bib. I was so excited! I could feel the magic everywhere around me. Friday morning (Feb. 24) was my first race, which was the 5K (3.1 miles). I could feel my stomach getting so many butterflies, but I knew I could do it.

My husband, Stan, helped me get ready and put my headphones on. We played the song, Eye of the Tiger. I know that sounds silly, but Stan picked that song out for me many years ago. It always calms my nerves and helps me focus.

As I approached the starting line, I knew I had everyone’s support back home. Even though everyone was far away, I could still feel it.

Day two (Saturday, Feb. 25) was the longer run, a 10k. It was very warm outside, and the humidity was much higher than I’m used to. I knew I had to stay hydrated and more focused than ever. My run began at the EPCOT theme park and continued to Disney’s Hollywood Studios before ending back at EPCOT. It was so magical! Although I was tired, I knew I had trained so hard for this. I just had to stay focused and continue on. When I saw the finish line, I had to give it everything I had. Surprisingly, I wasn’t even tired. I thought I would be, so I knew I had to finish strong.

Crossing that finish line was extraordinary! I could hear everyone cheering, including Stan. I was so proud of myself. I didn’t stop running, I didn’t get swept away by the “Balloon Ladies,” and I didn’t finish last. (The “Balloon Ladies” are runners in the runDisney race who help keep the pace. Falling behind the “Balloon Ladies” most likely means that you will be exited from the course.)

I accomplished what I set out to do!

Thank you for letting me share my story with you. I hope everyone realizes that anything is possible when you believe.

I would like to thank the Burns Times-Herald for allowing me to share my story and everyone who supported and encouraged me. I would especially like to thank my husband, Stan, and best friend, Tammy Attleberger, for being my inspiration. We all need someone like you!
