Raymond Lee “Ike” Williams “Papa Ike” 1936 – 2022

On Monday, Jan. 2, 2023, Ike passed away at the age of 86, at his home in Burns. Ike was born on Dec. 28, 1936 in Burns, to Ralph Williams and Beryl Reisburg Williams.

At the age of 12, he moved to North Bend with his mom and stayed with his Aunt MaryLou and Uncle Jack Davidson, whom he adored.  At the age of 13 he learned to log with his uncle in the Sweet Home area. Eventually he moved back to Burns where he resided the rest of his life.

He met and married Jacquie Fulton and had four children: Ronald, Deren, Kerry and Kathi.  They were married for 44 years until her passing.

Ike was a member of the Army National Guard and was also a long standing member of the Elks Lodge. He worked at Edward Hines Lumber Company pulling green chain and operating an overhead crane for years.  He then went to the  ‘Woods” for Edward Hines and then worked for Jim Howden Logging where he eventually retired. While employed by Jim Howden, he was named Logger of the Month in February 1977. He also turned out to be a great mechanic in the woods.

Ike met and married Terri Mingus in August 2000. They spent the next 22 years traveling, hitting up casinos from one end of the coast to the other and camping with friends. He loved spending time with his brother and sister in-laws Jim and Joan Wisor and Jan and Mike Buckley. Ike and Jim  enjoyed fishing, gambling, arguing and telling lies.

After Ike’s retirement, while Terri was still working, Ike went to work driving the senior bus taking seniors to appointments in Bend until his eyesight failed him.

Ike was an avid sports enthusiast, especially watching the Dallas Cowboys and the Oregon Ducks. He thoroughly enjoyed watching all of his children and grandchildren compete in sporting events through the years, as well as coaching little league softball. He was also a great softball player. He continued to be a die hard Hilander fan even after his kids and grandkids graduated. He was very involved with his extended daycare families and their kids. His namesake “Papa Ike” as he was most commonly known for came from his days of helping with their in-home daycare and had a nickname for every child that attended.

Ike loved hunting deer, elk, grouse, jackrabbits, ducks and geese. He also loved camping and fishing.  He fished his favorite fishing spots Chickahominy and the Blitzen River with his dad, grandpa Ralph, and with Bud Fulton at Warm Springs, Beulah and Krumbo.

Other things that Ike enjoyed (besides sports) were reading, coast trips, loved all dogs, keeping up his beautiful yard and gardening. He also loved eating chili dogs, mac and cheese, cheezits, Reeses, York Peppermint Patties and most sweets or junk food. He excelled at doing the crossword puzzles. He never missed an episode of Jeopardy and rarely missed the final question.

Ike really enjoyed visiting Merle at Reid’s Market bantering about the upcoming games.  Always had a bet on any Duck, Beaver, or Dallas Cowboy game for a huge stake of $5.

Ike was man of many talents and had many interests. He will be missed tremendously by his whole family.
