Judge Rob Raschio blocks Measure 114 News December 14, 2022December 14, 20220 On Tuesday, Dec. 6, Harney County Circuit Court Judge Robert S. Raschio granted a temporary restraining order against all provisions of Oregon’s Measure 114. Approved by the majority of Oregon’s voters last month, Measure 114 is a gun-control measure intended to reduce gun violence. The measure was to become law on Dec. 8. However, it is now on hold, pending further hearings scheduled for Dec. 13. Measure 114 calls for a permit to buy a gun. It also bans the sale, transfer, and manufacture of magazines holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition. A background check would also be required for any sale or transfer of a gun. On Wednesday, Dec. 7, the Oregon Supreme Court let Raschio’s temporary order stand without intervention. The temporary order was in response to a case brought by Gun Owners of America and two Harney County residents. The lawsuit asked the court to block the entire measure while considering its constitutional merits. While Measure 114 passed statewide with 50.7 percent of the vote, only six of Oregon’s 36 counties supported it. In Harney County, 85 percent of voters opposed it. A public meeting to hear input from local residents pertaining to Measure 114 was held Tuesday, Dec. 13, at the Harney County Courthouse. The results of the meeting were not available by press time. However, a follow-up article will appear in a later edition.
