Concert Program brings art and music to the community

As part of the Concert Program, the Old Time Fiddlers played toe-tapping tunes at The Aspens this summer.

On Sept. 24, a crowd gathered in the Family Eyecare of Harney County courtyard to watch a mural come to life in downtown Burns.

Audiences were treated to music played by harpist Megan Karchner; folksongs from around the world by the popular Sage Rats duo – Janet Braymen and Joan Suther; rousing renditions of familiar songs by troubadour Tom Wallis; a cello concert by Marianne Andrews and her student, Liam; gospels and folksongs by the team of Bonnie and Ryan Adams; and toe-tapping favorites by the Old Time Fiddlers.

On Sept. 24, local band Red Mabel was invited to play during a live mural painting event in the Family Eyecare of Harney County’s courtyard, off West Washington Street in Burns. The crowd watched as the muralist, a master of airbrush techniques, made flying geese appear on the side of the building.

The Concert Program is the result of a special grant that the Oregon Community Foundation (OCF) gave to each county’s Cultural Coalition. The funds were administered by the Oregon Cultural Trust. Separately, OCF sent similar awards directly to tribal entities.

The crowd was treated to music by local favorite Red Mabel.

HCCC expressed gratitude for the opportunity to take cultural programs into places where resident and/or visiting populations may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience the enrichment of music. HCCC believes it is also appropriate to provide cultural events that are open to everyone in this rural, frontier community. Look for announcements of upcoming productions that will appear somewhere later this year.

Each year, HCCC receives funding from the Oregon Cultural Trust to carry out its mission of access, awareness, and education of the arts, heritage, and the humanities. HCCC meets occasionally throughout the year and welcomes anyone who would like to discuss past programs and plans for future projects.
