After a week of snow and a canceled home game against Vale, Burns traveled to Boardman for a doubleheader against Riverside High School on Friday, April 15.

The Hilanders made quick work of the Pirates, winning both games 19-4, 17-2.

In the first game, Leauna Dupuy started in the circle and pitched the first three innings for the win. Dupuy gave up four runs on five hits while striking out two and walking two. Mackenzie King relieved Dupuy in the fourth inning and gave up no runs.

Macy Temple, Gracie Mello, Merissa Medley, Ashley Wright, and Lydia Dupuy had three hits apiece. Mattie Woodbury, Grace Johnson, Kaya Dobson, Halle Houck, and King each had one hit.

Medley and Wright each crossed the plate four times, while Temple, Mello, and King crossed twice.

Medley, Dobson, and Lydia Dupuy led the team with three RBIs each, and Mello finished with two.

In the second game, Leauna Dupuy received the win, throwing two and one-third innings, striking out five batters, walking one, and giving up one run on two hits.

Woodbury pitched the last two-thirds inning, giving up one run before inducing the game-ending double play.

Woodbury, Medley, Lydia Dupuy, and Leauna Dupuy led the team with two hits each. Olivia Blute, Analeesa Thomas, Temple, Tiller, King, and Johnson each finished with one hit.

Woodbury and Lydia Dupuy each crossed the plate three times, while Temple, Tiller, King, and Thomas each scored twice.

After the games, Coach Robert Medley said, “It was a cold and snowy week, canceling our only other game with Vale, but the girls practiced hard, stayed focused, and were ready to play when we got to Riverside.”

Medley continued, “We scored 13 runs in the first inning of both games, and our energy level was high from the start. I’m really proud of our three pitchers — Dupuy, King, and Woodbury — for really competing on the mound. [We have] another long week of practice coming up, with our only games being on Saturday, so it will be important to be crisp and for us coaches to be creative at practices.”

Since dropping their opening game against Grant Union, Burns has rattled off 15 straight wins and are 15-1 overall and 4-0 in the league.

The Hilanders travel to Umatilla for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 23. The first game is set to start at 1 p.m.
