Hilander baseball finishes 2-1 at Grant Union

The Burns baseball team took part in the Grant Union baseball tournament in John Day over four days, Wednesday-Saturday, March 23-26.

On Wednesday, the Hilanders made quick work of the Tigers, winning 14-4.

Burns jumped to 3-0 at the end of the first inning. Ontario was able to tie the game at the top of the second, before the Hilanders added five more runs in the bottom of the second.

Up 12-4 going into the bottom of the fifth, the Hilanders brought in two more run to enact the 10-run rule.

Jaden Tiller picked up the win, throwing all five innings and stiking out 11 batters.

The next day, Thursday, March 24, Burns fell to the Sisters Outlaws 8-3, committing five errors in the loss.

The Hilanders were able to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the third, but were unable to get the offense rolling. Sisters added two more runs in the bottom of the third and three in the fifth to seal the win.

Devon Otley-Smith received the loss, throwing all six innings and striking out eight batters.

Two days later on Saturday, March 26, the Hilanders faced off against Valley Catholic, making quick work of the Valiants in five innings, 16-3.

Burns jumped off to a fast start, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first inning.

The Hilanders held Valley Catholic scoreless in the first three innings, while picking up another score in the second and adding seven more in the third.

The Valiants were finally able to get on the score board in the top of the fourth and added two more in the fifth before the 10-run rule took effect.

Burns hosted their first home game of the season against North Lake on Tuesday, March 29. The team will play in Ontario on Friday, April 1 and then host Madras on Saturday, April 2 to round out the week.
