Born in Three Rivers, Mich., Herbert served in the US Navy from 1947-1950.

After the military, he lived in Michigan with his family,working as a printer. Herbert moved his family to Burns in 1960, where he worked as a printer at the Burns Times-Herald until 1973. After working at the paper, Herbert then took a job working at the Edward Hines Lumber Mill before retiring in 1988.

Herbert was preceded in death by his wife, Blanch. He is survived by his sister; three children; and numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
