The Western Oregon University (WOU) athletic department will be inducting three new members into the Hall of Fame this year, as the Wolves welcomed Kurt Davis, Duke Iverson, and Katie (Torland) Hein into the 2021 class. This year’s class was inducted during Homecoming on Oct. 8 and 9. Katie (Torland) Hein put together an impressive career over her three-year span at Western Oregon University during the early NCAA DII era from 2007-2010. She tallied 1,257 points in 82 games, holding a 15.3 points-per-game career average. She also started all 82 games for the Wolves. In addition, Torland connected on 400 field goals, 113 three-pointers, 344 free throws, grabbed 561 rebounds, dished out 124 assists, and had 120 steals. She averaged in double-figures in scoring in all three seasons and finished her career shooting over 41 percent from the field, 37 percent from long range, and 82 percent at the foul line. Torland was named to the All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC), First Team twice, named Women’s basketball Player of the Year her junior and senior seasons, and was selected to seven straight all-tournament teams. She later joined the WOU coaching staff following her playing career. Since 2000, Torland ranks in the top-10 in program history in multiple categories, including points (2nd), scoring average (1st), field goals made (3rd), rebounding average (5th), defensive rebounds (3rd), and offensive rebounds (6th). Katie’s freshman stats while playing for University Nebraska-Kearny could not be included in stat calculations. Otherwise, Katie would be 1st in several categories. Katie is in her ninth year of teaching physical education and weight training at Cascade High School in Turner. Katie joined Carl “Duke” Iverson (football coach) and Kurt Davis (football and wrestling) as Western Oregon University 2021 Hall of Fame Inductees.
