George Douglas Campbell 1942 – 2021

George Douglas Campbell, husband, father, Pa, farmer, cattle rancher, real estate broker & pilot passed away on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2021. 

Doug was born to John and Francis Campbell on July 31, 1942 in Bakersfield, Calif. As a boy Doug helped his father and uncle growing cotton, corn & melons.

He was very active in Future Farmers of America (FFA), earning the FFA Degree of State Farmer, FFA Honor Award and FFA Degree of American Farmer. He graduated Arvin High School in 1959, going onto earn an Associate of Arts Degree from Bakersfield College in 1963.

Doug married Pam Porterfield in April of 1963 and they had three children, Kristin, Georgy and John. The Campbells moved to Harney County where they owned and operated the Slash C Ranch. 

In 1967 Doug was awarded the Harney County Jaycees Outstanding Young Farmer Award. Six years later in 1973, Doug along with his father John, were bestowed the Harney County Grassman of the Year award. 

Doug and his sister, Sherry, built owned and operated the Hangin’ Tree, a Country and Western Wear store located where Selco Credit Union stands today. He was also a successful Real Estate Broker and Pilot. 

Doug met Denise Christensen and a 42 relationship ensued as they shared their lives together, marrying July 31, 2010. 

Donations can be made in Doug’s memory at Bank of Eastern Oregon to purchase a bench with Doug’s name to be placed at Burns Municipal Airport or to Harney County Home Health & Hospice. 

Doug is survived by his wife, Denise Christensen Campbell; sister, Sherry McManus; children, Kristin (Dave) Iverson, Georgy (Mike) Witzel, John (April) Campbell and Bobbi Jo (Bryan) Heany; eight grandchildren, Zach, Emmaline, Miranda, Dustin, Michael, Gavin, Tanner and Owen; two great-grandchildren; and numerous friends, namely Rich Davis, Dwight Hammond, Jack McAllister, Walt Sitz, Scott Franklin and Justin Dimzoff. 

Doug would joke and sometimes say “I had a friend once”, truth be told he had many lifelong friends and will be dearly missed by many.
