Burns High School volleyball team goes 4-1 in opening week Burns Sports Burns Volleyball Sports September 1, 2021September 1, 20210 The Burns High School (BHS) volleyball team kicked off the season by hosting 5A Crook County High School in Burns on Thursday, Aug. 26. The Hilanders kept each match close, but were unable to defeat the Cowgirls. Crook County won in four sets, 25-22, 20-25, 25-21, 25-23. Mackenzie King led the Hilanders with 15 kills, Kaitlyn Wright finished in second with 10, and Akylah Kaino and Reese Rothwell each had six. Macy Temple led the team with 20 digs. K. Wright, Kaya Dobson, and King each had 17, and Ashley Wright ended with 10. K. Wright finished with four blocks. Dobson and Kaino had three block. A. Wright, King, and Rothwell finished with two blocks each. A. Wright led the team with 36 out of 39 assists. ••• Two days later, the BHS volleyball team traveled to Lakeview to play in the Tall-Man Tournament. In their first game, Burns defeated Lost River High School in two sets, 25-11, 25-11. Kaino was the player of the game with eight kills, one dig, and one assist. King finished with six kills, K. Wright had five digs, and Rothwell had one. Dobson and Temple each finished the game with a serving percentage of 100. K. Wright led the team with seven digs. A. Wright, Temple, and Dobson each had three digs. King had two, and Rothwell finished with one. A. Wright led the team with 14 assists, Dobson had two, and King ended the day with one. ••• In the next match, Burns defeated La Pine in two sets 25-15, 25-19. K. Wright was named player of the game with 10 kills, one block, and five digs. Kaino finished second on the team with eight kills, followed by King with six. Rothwell had three. Dobson and A. Wright had one apiece. Dobson led the team with a serving percentage of 100. Dobson, A. Wright, and Rothwell finished with one block apiece. King led the team with eight digs, Dobson had two, and Temple and A. Wright had one each. A. Wright led the Hilanders with 22 assists, Dobson had two, and King finished with one. ••• The Hilanders’ third match of the day was against the host team, Lakeview. The Honkers were able to take the first set from the Hilanders, but they were unable to finish. Burns took the match in three sets 25-27, 25-16, 15-9. A. Wright was the player of the game, finishing with two kills, one block, three digs, and 24 assists. K. Wright led the Hilanders with 14 kills, King finished with seven, Rothwell had two, and Kaino had one. K. Wright, Kaino, King, and Rothwell each finished with one block. King led the team with 10 digs, Temple had seven, K. Wright and Dobson finished with two, and Kaino had one. ••• In the last game of the Tall-Man Tournament, the Hilanders defeated Bonanza High School in straight sets 25-14, 25-13. A. Wright was named player of the game, finishing with 20 assists, two digs, and one block. King led the team with 12 kills, K. Wright finished with six, Kaino had four, and Rothwell ended with one. Dobson had a serving percentage of 100. Rothwell finished with two blocks, and Kaino had one. Temple led the Hilanders with six digs, K. Wright finished with four, King had three, and Kaino and Rothwell had one apiece. ••• The Hilanders finished the week 4-1 and will travel to Creswell High School on Thursday, Sept. 2 to face Creswell and Sutherlin. The Hilanders will begin playing at 2 p.m.
