(Photo by TERRI WATTS) A new water tank was constructed to serve the city of Hines water system. This tank replaces the old water tower and is being filled, tested, and sanitized. The water will also be tested for quality and sanitation before the new tank will service the Hines water system. Following these steps, the new tank is scheduled to be in use between Aug. 10 and Aug. 15. When water from the new tank enters the system, residents are likely to notice the presence of chlorine in the water, either by smell or taste. The city recognizes that this will be a new experience for water users in Hines because the city does not usually chlorinate the water. Chlorine will only be used during the initial sanitation of the new tank and will NOT be a permanent procedure. After the tank is first filled, chlorine will no longer be needed to sanitize the tank or the water. However, residents may notice a chlorine smell or residue until it has been completely flushed through the system. This may take up to 60 days.
