Crane girls basketball team defeats Country Christian High School for 1A title Crane Basketball Crane Sports Sports June 30, 2021June 30, 20210 Photo by RHETT LANDON The Crane Mustangs girls basketball team cruised through the 1A State Championship tournament in Baker City, winning the 1A State Championship for the second straight year. The Mustangs systematically and methodically struck down any opponent that stood in their way to the title. Averaging just over 60 points a game this season, Crane’s closest game was against Powder Valley, where the badgers lost by seven. The state tournament was no exception either, with Crane scoring 63 points a game. First up for the Mustangs (9-0) in the tournament was Perrydale High School (4-6) from the Casco League, where the Mustangs trampled over the Pirates, 69-10. Leading scorer for Crane was Kortney Doman with 23 points. Shelie Doman had 14 points, Kelsie Siegner finished with 13, Taylor Joyce scored eight, Leslie Doman scored seven, and Skye Miller had four. In the quarterfinals, Crane (10-0) once again put the game out of reach early for South Wasco County High School (8-3), defeating the Redsides, 65-26. Siegner led the Mustangs with 18 points. K. Doman finished with 17, and S. Doman racked up a double-double, scoring 12 points and 10 rebounds. L. Doman scored nine points, Joyce scored five points, and Alexia Ballard finished with four. Crane (11-0) faced off against Damascus Christian High School (7-3) in the semifinal game, where the Mustangs were victorious over the Eagles, 43-23. Siegner posted a double-double, scoring 20 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. S. Doman finished with nine points, L. Doman scored seven, Ballard had four points, and Joyce scored three. The Mustangs (12-0) met Country Christian High School (15-1) in the finals on June 24 at Baker High School. Tied at 8-8 late in the first quarter, the Eagles were unable to keep up with the Mustangs’ offense. By the end of the first quarter, Crane led 20-8. From there, Country Christian lost any hope of catching up to the Mustangs, as Crane kept the foot to the pedal and won the state title, 75-54. Siegner led the Mustangs in scoring with 18 points, followed by Miller with 16 points. K. Doman finished with a double-double, 15 points and 10 rebounds. L. Doman scored 12 points, S. Doman had nine points, Joyce finished with three points, and Ballard scored two points. Crane finishes the season, 13-0, averaging just over 60 points a game while giving up only 25 points a game.
