Digital Youth Art Contest Arts and Entertainment Youth April 15, 2020April 16, 20200 2019 festival winning artwork by Emily Bisbee of Burns High School. Now until May 1, youth in kindergarten through high school can begin their unique artwork creation of migratory birds. The art contest encourages youth to observe, understand, and ultimately share what they have learned and observed about migratory birds. By creating a unique art entry, youth are provided an opportunity to artistically express their knowledge of the diversity, interdependence, and beauty of wildlife. Artwork must be a portrayal of a native North American bird species likely to be seen in Harney County. “This is a perfect time for youth to learn and observe migratory birds,” Carey Goss, wildlife refuge specialist at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, said. “Thousands of migratory birds will be visiting the area, even in backyards, and this is an incredible way for youth to connect with these birds through art.” A bird species list is available to assist youth in the art contest. Educators, supervising adults, and youth are encouraged to use curriculum guides to direct exploration and investigation of migratory birds and their habitat needs as well as the principles of visual art design. All entries will be posted digitally on the Friends of Malheur and Harney County Migratory Bird Festival Facebook and the website gallery pages. Entries will be judged in four groups according to grade level: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. First, second, and third place entries will be selected from each grade level by a voting process. Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in each group, including a $100 gift certificate for first-place winners. Winners will also be invited to send a photo with their artwork for the newspaper, the Harney County Migratory Bird Festival website, and other promotional purposes. Contest deadline is May 1, and only one entry per youth may be entered. All entries must be sent digitally by the deadline to carey_goss@fws.gov. Notification of winners will be made no later than May 11. For more information, specific rules, and criteria for the contest, please contact Carey Goss at carey_goss@fws.gov.
