When it’s time for a haircut and/or a shave, residents and visitors alike now have another option.

The Parlor, owned and operated by Bill Crowell, opened Jan. 21, and the clippers and razors have been busy since then.

Crowell said he always wanted to be a barber, even cutting his own hair at an early age, so this is a dream come true.

“This is the best decision I’ve ever made,” he said.

Before moving to Harney County, Crowell did concrete finish work in Reno, Nev., before selling cars both there and in Bend. The dream of being a barber was calling, however, and he enrolled at Phagans’ Central Oregon Beauty College in Bend, setting the course to achieve his goal. He attended Phagans’ for nine months, putting in 1,350 course hours and performing 1,157 haircuts. Once finishing the course work, Crowell passed the state boards and received state certification.

Crowell can adapt his cuts and shaves to customers’ needs.

Seeing that Central Oregon was growing fast,  maybe too fast, Crowell and his wife, Bryttani, decided to make the move to Burns last September.

Once in town, Crowell started work at His Cuts in Burns. Soon, a space in the Ponderosa Village opened up, and Crowell said he jumped at the chance to have his own barber shop.

“I love it,” he said. “I guess you could say I favor the more traditional haircuts, but you have to adapt to the customers’ needs. The older guys want something different than the high school kids, so that’s what I offer.”

If customers want to avoid possible waiting time, appointments can be made by calling 541-848-8884, or online at The Parlor’s Facebook page. The Parlor also accepts credit and debit cards.

To celebrate his new endeavor, Crowell is hosting a grand opening from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 8. Smoking Pit Barbecue will be there, and attendees will have a chance to enter a drawing for a hot towel shave or a haircut.

The Parlor is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
