Kids are going to the birds

Every year, adult volunteers throughout the United States count birds and contribute to one of the most successful citizen science projects in the world, taking part in local bird surveys known as the Christmas Bird Count. For the first time, children in Harney County will have the chance to be citizen scientists in the same program known as CBC4Kids.

Children and their families who want to take part can either form their own teams or join a team, meeting at the Harney County Library at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, for orientation and area assignments. There will be a Binocular Boot Camp, and binoculars will be available for those needing them for the morning walk and count. There will be volunteer expert birders on hand to lead teams and help them identify and record the birds in various neighborhoods of Burns and Hines.

Following the morning bird count, there will be a free lunch and count tally at Glory Days Pizza from noon to 1:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded in various categories, and participation awards will be given to all who take part.

There will be a whole week of “birdy” activities for children at Harney County Library that week.

Children will be able to make and take home simple bird feeders during Storytime, which will be held Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 10:30 a.m. A Lego bird-creation contest will be held during Lego My Library Club on Wednesday, Jan. 8. Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m., Teresa Wicks, local representative for Portland Audubon, will present a program for tweens, including a craft titled The Owls of Harry Potter.

Advance sign-ups are recommended. Go to HarneyCountyLibrary.org/CBC4Kids to sign up online, or simply call the library at 541-573-6670.
