Rosanna (Rosie) Irene Burgess Duberow 1923-2019 Obituary October 9, 2019October 10, 20190 Rosanna (Rosie) Irene Burgess Duberow passed away Sept. 26, at the age of 96. She was born March 7, 1923, in Bend, to Samuel and Myrtle Scoggin Burgess who were part of the Shevlin-Hixon logging company. Rosanna graduated from La Pine High School. She was a princess in the Bend Water Pageant and represented Central Oregon in the Rose Festival Parade. Rosanna attended Oregon State University, majoring in home economics. In 1944, she met Bernard (Barney) G. Duberow while they were both working for the U.S. Forest Service. Rosanna and Barney were married in Corvallis in 1945. Rosanna and Barney welcomed four children into their family while living at the Ochoco Ranger Station, moving their family to Bend in 1958. They were longtime members of the Bend Presbyterian church. Rosanna was joyously involved in the community, singing in several choirs. She was a PEO member. She supported her children as they ski raced for the Bend Skyliners. Some of her many accomplishments included serving as a 4-H club leader, a county and state fair home-economics judge, a substitute schoolteacher for many years, and a librarian at Bend Senior High School. She was crowned Bend’s Mother of the Year. Her hospitality was renowned, hosting family, friends, foreign exchange students, numerous ski racers, traveling foresters, and others. She prepared delicious meals at the drop of a hat for countless guests. She was a Master Gardener, sharing her expertise and the garden bounty throughout the community. With Barney, she was an enthusiastic skier, ski instructor, camper, hiker, and canoeist. As a canoeist, she competed in Bend’s Pole, Pedal, Paddle race and, with her team, won many coffee mugs. Rosanna and Barney enjoyed traveling, especially to Alaska, Hawaii, Erie, Pa., Europe, and New Zealand as well as Calgary and Salt Lake City for the Winter Olympics. Rosanna was a wonderful mother, thoughtful, loving, and forgiving. She always strove to see the best in everyone she encountered. Rosanna lived in Burns the last seven years of her life, giving everyone she met her love and attention. She loved going to concerts, Pioneer Presbyterian Church, and Harney County fairs. She enjoyed playing cards while listening to the Old-Time Fiddlers. She loved Harney County skies and the neighborhood flower gardens. Rosanna is survived by her sisters-in-law, Bonnie Stone Burgess, and Betty Duberow Smith; children, Gerard (Christi), Frederick (Rebecca), Marianne (Gordon), and Robin (Carol); as well as eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Barney; and siblings, James, Evelyn, Marjorie, and Charles. Rosanna’s memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at the Pioneer Presbyterian Church in Burns.
