On Monday, Sept. 23, at approximately 8 p.m., the Harney County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a lost hiker near Delintment Lake. Harney County Search and Rescue was activated as a result.

Searchers attempted to locate Nancy Thornton, 86, of Vancouver, Wash., throughout the night and into the morning of Sept. 24.

Thornton was located at approximately 10:50 a.m. and reunited with her husband. She was transported to Harney District Hospital by ambulance where she was treated for exposure-related symptoms.

This was a multiagency search involving the following agencies: Harney County Sheriff’s Office, Harney County Search and Rescue, Harney District Hospital Emergency Medical Services, Burns Fire Department, the Bureau of Land Management, and the United States Forest Service. Search and Rescue teams from Malheur County, Baker County, Grant County, and Umatilla County, and a helicopter from LifeFlight from Redmond were also activated to assist with the search, but were turned around once Thornton was located.
