Hilanders take second at Baker tourney

The Hilanders get the block in their win over La Pine.

The Burns volleyball team finished 2-1 at the Baker Tournament on Sept. 13, placing second after a loss to La Grande in the championship match.

The Hilanders defeated Weiser, Idaho, in two games, 25-17, 25-17. The Hilanders’ offense recorded 20 kills in the match, led by Allie Hueckman with nine and Kaitlyn Wright with six.

Hueckman also led the team with 10 digs, Kaya Dobson had nine, and Kaiden Raif added eight. Raif led the team in assists with 19.

The Hilanders then knocked off Baker in two, 25-23, 25-20.

Hueckman and Wright provided a one-two punch in kills once again, with nine and seven, respectively.

Mariah Atencio accounted for four of the team’s eight blocks, and Raif, Dobson, and Hueckman each had nine digs. Raif again led the team in assists with 23.

In the title match, Burns lost to La Grande, 25-17, 16-25, 9-15.

Hueckman racked up 10 kills, and Wright finished with nine. Wright also led the team in blocks with six.

Burns played well defensively, coming up with 53 digs in the match. Hueckman had 17 digs, Raif nine, and Dobson eight. Raif also had 21 assists.

Burns opened up league play on Tuesday, Sept. 17, by hosting Nyssa. Results of the match were not available by press time.

The Burns volleyball team defeated Grant Union in three games on Sept. 12, 25-22, 25-22, 25-14.

The Burns volleyball team picked another nonconference win by sweeping La Pine in three games on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 25-14, 25-13, 25-16.

Hueckman led the Hilanders’ offensive attack, smacking down 18 of the team’s 31 kills. Atencio added four kills, and Wright had three.

Fawntana Britt had a good night serving, recording four aces, and Raif notched 25 assists.

On the defensive side, Atencio led the team in blocks with three, and Dobson and Raif came up with 14 and 12 digs, respectively.
