It’s time to catch some carp! News August 14, 2019August 15, 20190 File photo Last year, close to 700 pounds of carp were removed from the Blitzen River where it feeds into Malheur Lake. Friends of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge will be hosting the annual Carp Derby on Saturday, Aug. 17, at the refuge. Billed as “A fishing frenzy for the whole family,” the derby is free for all ages. Registration begins at 7 a.m. at the Refuge Headquarters, followed by fishing until 11 a.m. The carp will then be weighed, and prizes awarded. There will be a winner in five different age categories for individuals who catch the most pounds of carp. A grand prize of almost $300 in fishing gear was donated by Boomer’s Place and will be awarded to whoever lands the largest fish of the day. A current Oregon fishing license is required for all those 14 and older. The carp derby is held each year to help reduce the common carp population in Malheur Lake. Last year, about 30 participants removed close to 700 pounds of carp from the Blitzen River where it feeds into Malheur Lake.
