The applicant must have successfully completed one semester/trimester of post-high school education, and be enrolled in the second or subsequent semester/trimester of a standard post high school education program in order to be awarded a scholarship. Examples of these could be a community college, state college or university, or trade school. Applicants must be full-time students. The HDC schedules one cutting each year with increased fees for the purpose of raising funds to provide scholarships to deserving applicants. The HDC provide as many scholarships of $500 to $1,000 as funds allow, to at least one Harney County Youth annually. Youth may be living outside of Harney County for education purposes, but youth’s dependent family must be residents of Harney County. Family members of the selection committee are ineligible for the scholarship, but all other general members may apply. Students are selected based on essays explaining potential contribution to the community and commitment to an education. The High Desert Cutters is a club dedicated to promoting cutting horse events, and endeavors to develop good fellowship among participants. HDC especially recognizes the importance of enhancing opportunities for youth and modeling concepts of fairness, good horsemanship, and community participation. Horses and riders of all levels are invited to join the fun.
