Richard Lloyd Fasteen, 85, passed away peacefully at St. Charles Medical Center May 28.

Richard was born May 3, 1934, in Burns, the first child of Lloyd Theodore Fasteen and Elena Seva Jarvinen. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1954, having the honor to serve and protect our nation as he diligently elevated his military ranking to Master Chief. Richard traveled throughout many Naval ports and academies with many beloved submarine crewmates. Throughout his 21-year career, Richard lovingly acquired a few military nicknames such as COB (Chief of Boat) and Dutch.

Richard married Marie Ann Schermerhorn and welcomed to his heart her daughter, Nancy, on Dec. 16, 1961. In 1962, Richard and Marie lovingly adopted their daughter, Brenda. After 21 years of service with the Navy, Richard retired and moved his family to his hometown of Hines. He followed in his father’s footsteps and began a career with the Edward Hines Lumber Company, and later retired from Snow Mountain Pine Lumber Company. Richard was very committed to the Elks organization, serving as trustee, safety officer, bar manager, and finally, treasurer for many years, up until he passed away. Additionally, he committed much of his free time to assist the Elks Lodge with several aspects of charitable contributions to the community.

During their years in Oregon, Richard and Marie enjoyed camping and fishing the local mountains and fisheries, and gathering and golfing with local friends throughout Oregon. Additionally, they both loved to travel and visit children and grandchildren in Arizona and California.

Richard is survived by his brother, Gerald Arthur Fasteen; daughter, Nancy Margaret Miller and her husband, Terry Wayne Miller; daughter, Brenda Ann Barton; grandchildren, Lynn Louise Crawford, Stephen Sirman Hart, James Richard Barton, Joshua Steven Barton, Jeremy Randal Barton, and Amanda Rose Barton; six great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at the Elks Lodge in Burns. Interment will be scheduled for a later date, which will be shared during the memorial, and held at the Willamette National Cemetery in Happy Valley.
