The Burns Hilanders’ Emmett Klus was a repeat champion in both the 800  meters and the 1500 meters races to lead the Burns boys track team to a fourth-place finish at the OSAA 3A Track & Field State Championships held May 17-18 at Mount Hood Community College in Gresham.

Burns placed fourth with 45 points, just four points behind first-place St. Mary’s.

Klus won the 800 with a time of 1:59.45, and the 1500 in 4:12.89. The Hilanders’ JP Friedrichsen was second in the 1500m with a time of 4:15.44.

Klayton Nutter of Burns raced to a third-place finish in the 200 meters (23.05), and finished sixth in the 400 meters (53.07), and Calvin Bates was fourth in the 3000 meters (9:22.89).

The 4×400 relay team of Bates, Nutter, Friedrichsen, and Klus placed sixth (3:34.13).

Allie Hueckman, a sophomore at Burns High School, is the state champion in the high jump for the second year in row. Hueckman cleared 5 feet, 4 inches to win the title at the OSAA 3A Track & Field State Championships held May 17-18 at Mount Hood Community College in Gresham.

Hueckman’s title helped the Burns girls track team earn a sixth-place finish at the meet with 45 points. St. Mary’s won the team title with 79 points.

Hueckman also placed sixth in the javelin (116-03) and 10th in the long jump (14-06).

The Hilanders’ McKenzi Hoyt finished second in the 3000 meters (10:48.59) and third in the 1500 meters (4:54.44). Olivia Winn finished sixth in the 3000 (11:17.69) and 10th in the 1500 (5:18.01). In the 800 meters, Kaitlyn Wright was third (2:23.51), Riley Morris ninth (2:29.93), and Sarah Letham 10th (2:31.97). Annabelle Johnson picked up points for the Hilanders with a fourth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles (48.92) and fifth place in the 100-meter hurdles (17.22). Morris also placed ninth in the 3000 meters (11:26.18), Kaiden Raif was 11th in the triple jump (30-06.50), and the 4×400 relay team of Sayge Root, Hoyt, Johnson and Wright finished ninth (4:19.64).

Riley Davis won the 1A state shot put championship and the Crane girls track team tied for seventh at the OSAA 1A Track & Field State Championships held May 17-18 at Western Oregon University in Monmouth.

Davis’ winning throw of 37 feet, nine inches, was more than a foot better than the second-place finisher. Crane’s Kathryn Burns came in fourth in the shot put (33-08.75).

Laurel Witzel of Crane placed second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.02. Shelie Doman was fifth in the discus (102-06), and Burns placed 7th (99-03), and Kelsie Siegner placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles (50.36), seventh in the 400 meters (1:05.27), and ninth in the triple jump (31-02.50).

The Lady Mustangs finished with 35 points at the meet, tying Damascus Christian for seventh place. Adrian won the state title with 57 points, three points ahead of St. Paul.
