Elva Jeanne Hoffman 1928-2019

Elva Jeanne Hoffman passed away April 5 at her home in La Grande at the age of 91.

Elva was born Feb. 13, 1928, in La Grande to John and Velma (Conklin) McKinnis. After graduating from Imbler High School, she attended Eastern Oregon Normal School (now Eastern Oregon University) for a period of time.

On Nov. 1, 1945, she married Marcus Studebaker in La Grande. They moved to John Day in 1950, then to Burns in 1957. She was a millworker for Edward Hines Lumber Company until the company closed in 1980.

She loved to laugh about the pranks that were pulled at work. Elva was active in 4-H with her children in John Day and Burns. She enjoyed camping and was always ready for the annual deer hunt. She enjoyed gardening, was an avid reader, and loved family get-togethers. She enjoyed writing letters and authored her family history. Her husband preceded her in death on Dec. 23, 1980.

In 1981, she went back to school at the La Grande business college. After graduating, she became a licensed tax preparer in Burns. She later became the bookkeeper for the Harney County Senior Center. Her sense of adventure really showed, as she took many road trips during this time of her life. The family accused her of keeping a packed suitcase by the door. On Nov. 12, 1988, she married George Hoffman in Winnemucca, Nev., and they lived in Crane. She and George took several road trips to Wisconsin to visit his family. She and George moved to La Grande in 1995. Elva enjoyed reconnecting with family members and old classmates in the area and making new lifelong friends. George passed away Jan. 1, 1998.

Elva was very active in her church and belonged to the Womens Connection.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Marvin and Maria Studebaker of Eugene, Beverly and Leroy Poe of Island City; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Besides her parents, Elva was preceded in death by her brother, Dean McKinnis in 1996; son, Steven Studebaker in 2007; and a granddaughter, Debbie (Studebaker) McMenomy.

A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 10, at the La Grande Church of the Nazarene, 109 18th Street.

A committal service will begin at 2 p.m. at the Summerville Cemetery.
