Mustangs place fourth at 1A state tournament

The Crane girls basketball team finished the season on a high note, downing Joseph 49-30 to win the fourth-place trophy at the OSAA/OnPoint Community Credit Union 1A Girls Basketball State Championship in Baker City.

Kelsie Siegner recorded a double-double for Crane, finishing with 20 points and 12 rebounds, and was named Moda Health Player of the Game for the Mustangs. Riley Davis added nine points and 17 rebounds in the victory.

The Mustangs led 11-9 after one quarter, and extended the lead to 24-16 at halftime.

Joseph scored the first two baskets of the third quarter to cut the lead to four, but the Mustangs closed out the quarter on a 12-0 run to lead 36-20 going into the final period.

Crane then outscored Joseph 13-10 to provide for the final margin.

Davis was named to the All-Tournament Second Team for her performance in the three games.

After losing their opening game at the OSAA/OnPoint Community Credit Union 1A Girls Basketball State Championship in Baker City, the Crane girls basketball team bounced back with a 54-41 victory over Jordan Valley.

The first score of the game came on a free throw by Crane’s Taelor Hammack, and Crane never lost the lead.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Elizabeth Jenkins and Shelie Doman put Crane ahead 7-3, and Crane led 17-16 at the end of the first quarter.

Leading 19-18 with just over five minutes left in the half, Crane outscored Jordan Valley 11-0 and went into the break with a 30-18 advantage.

Crane went up by as many as 15 points in the third quarter, and Jordan Valley never got closer than eight the remainder of the game as Crane moved into the consolation bracket finals.

Davis led Crane with 17 points and 17 rebounds, and was named the Moda Health Player of the Game for the Mustangs. Doman had 14 points, and Siegner added 13.

Sometimes the shots fall, sometimes they don’t.

For the Crane girls basketball team, the shots didn’t fall in the closing seconds of a 46-44 loss to Powder Valley in their first game at the OSAA/OnPoint Community Credit Union 1A Girls Basketball State Championship in Baker City.

Trailing 46-42 with 36 seconds left in the game, the Mustangs brought the ball into the front court, and cut the lead to two on a basket by Davis with 17 seconds to play.

Crane’s Hammack came up with a steal, giving the Mustangs a chance to tie or take the lead. A shot by Jenkins in the closing seconds was off the mark, as was the put-back by Doman, giving Powder Valley the two-point victory.

Crane led 13-9 at the end of the first quarter, and the Badgers outscored Crane 17-13 in the second quarter to deadlock the game at 26-26 at halftime.

The third quarter was close throughout as the score was tied three times and featured one lead change when Powder Valley went up 35-34 with 1:50 left in the period, and led 38-36 going into the final quarter.

Two baskets by Powder Valley in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter gave the Badgers a 42-36 advantage, but Crane battled back and tied the score at 42-42 on a 3-pointer by Doman with 2:46 left to play.

A bucket and two free throws then gave Powder Valley the four-point lead, setting up the almost-comeback by Crane.

Davis finished with a double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down 21 rebounds, and was named the Moda Health Player of the Game for Crane. Doman added 12 points, and Siegner dropped in 10.
