Page was born Oct. 24, 1936, in Warsaw, Mo., to Walter Allen and Mary Kathleen Page Dulaney. Page’s family moved to Clarkton, Mo., when he was a young child, and he graduated from Clarkton High School in 1954. On June 3, 1956, he married Dorothy Holloway in Malden, Mo., and they enrolled at Murray State University in Murray, Ky. In January 1957, Page enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, and was stationed in California. He was discharged as a corporal in 1959. Page and Dorothy moved back to Kentucky, where they re-enrolled at Murray State University, and in 1961, Page earned his B.S. degree. In 1962, he was granted his masters of arts in education and continued his studies, with an emphasis on westward expansion and Native American culture. During the 1962-63 school year, Page taught history and coached basketball in Bell City, Mo. From 1963 to 1966, Page and Dorothy lived in Monument, where Page’s fondness for hunting and fishing in the region, as well as his interaction with the people of Eastern Oregon, made a lasting impression. Page wanted to stay in Eastern Oregon, and when a new teaching and coaching opportunity arose in 1966, they moved to Wallowa. Their son, Jim, was welcomed into the family in 1967, making them a family of three. That same year, Page, along with teaching history, coached basketball, and his team earned second place in the Class B state tournament. Page coached state championship Wallowa basketball teams in both 1970 and 1972. During his coaching career, Page was named Coach of the Year and coached the East team in the East/West game. In 1973, they returned to Oregon, this time moving to Burns. In 1976, Page had one of his proudest moments of his coaching career when his team won the state basketball championship. As basketball coach at Burns High School, Page guided nine teams to the state tournament. That also included a third-place team in 1980. He retired from coaching in 1986 and took the position of activities director for the school district until his retirement in 1991. After retirement, he created Page’s Pit BBQ and toured throughout Oregon. In 1996, Page won the Oregon State Barbecue Championship, an accomplishment he took great pride in.
