Burns grapplers second at district, send 15 on to 3A state tournament

The Burns wrestling team had a successful weekend, placing second in the Special District 4 tournament and qualifying 15 wrestlers for the OSAA Class 3A State Wrestling Championships to be held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22-23, at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.

The top three finishers in each weight class qualified for the state tournament.

Nyssa laid claim to the team title, scoring 296.5 points. Burns finished second with 265.5 points, followed by Irrigon with 192, Vale 94, and Riverside 70.

The Hilanders had four individual champions as Justin Winn (126), Cody King (132), Wyatt Epling (138), and Dawson Williams (145) all earned gold medals.

Second-place finishes went to Corbett Graham (106), Kevin Peasley (120), Anthony Moulton (145), Mick Winn (160), Trace Prosser (182), and Luke Bailey (285).

Taking third were Oliver Barnes (106), Garrett Goss-Bodily (152), William Johnson (160), and Harlen Gunderson (170).

The Hilanders’ Jimmie Huffman placed fourth at 113 pounds, but was awarded a state berth as another district only had two qualifiers in the weight class.

Individual results for Burns are as follows:

106 — Corbett Graham received a bye; won by fall (2:21); lost by decision, 9-2. Oliver Barnes received a bye; lost by fall (1:28); won by fall (1:45); won by fall (2:38).

113 — Jimmie Huffman received a bye; lost by fall (1:51); won by forfeit; lost by decision, 7-0.

120 — Kevin Peasley won by fall (3:49); won in sudden victory, 6-4; lost by decision, 8-4. Bruin Thomas lost by fall (1:26); lost by fall (4:39).

126 — Justin Winn received a bye; won by fall (0:35); won by fall (2:19).

132 — Cody King received a bye; won by fall (5:02); won by fall (2:42).

138 — Wyatt Epling received a bye; won by fall (0:49); won by fall (2:58).

145 — Dawson Williams won by decision, 7-2; won by fall (0:41), won by decision, 8-4. Anthony Moulton received a bye; won by technical fall, 15-0 (5:02), lost by decision, 8-4.

152 — Garrett Goss-Bodily received a bye; lost by fall (2:48); received a bye; won by fall (3:52).

160 — Mick Winn received a bye; won by fall (1:12); lost by fall (5:22). William Johnson received a bye; lost in sudden victory, 11-9; won by forfeit; won by fall (0:09).

170 — Harlen Gunderson received  a bye; lost by decision, 3-1; received two byes.

182 — Trace Prosser received a bye; won by fall (1:19); lost by fall.

285 — Luke Bailey received a bye; won by decision, 5-3; lost by decision, 3-2.
