Cutting horse show to be held at Bell A Ranch Agriculture News June 13, 2018June 13, 20180 Mark your calendars as Coyote Rock Ranch presents the Oregon Cutting Horse Association’s cutting horse show at the Bell A Ranch in Burns on June 22-24. This is the second consecutive year that Oregon Cutting Horse Association (OCHA) and Coyote Rock Ranch have joined forces to put on a show that is sure to please exhibitors and spectators alike. Cutting is a sport grown from necessity and dates back to a time when ranchers worked and sorted through herds of cattle out on the open range, separating those in need of branding or doctoring. In the sport of cutting, the horse and rider emulate the ranch profession. Together, before a judge, the team demonstrates the horse’s athleticism and ability to handle cattle during a 2 1⁄2 minute performance, called a “run.” Last year, Bell A Ranch hosted a total of 412 runs with cutters from California, Washington, Idaho, and Oregon. This year, OCHA expects the show will be even bigger. Much of this event’s draw is location, location, location. The Bell A Ranch offers a spectacular venue for outdoor cutting. The event is run by great people, the Shelman family, and the cattle and ground are good — both necessary for a successful cutting event. Although ranch cutting is where cutting all started, exhibitors don’t get to cut outdoors very often. Enjoying the outdoor atmosphere on a real working ranch is a huge draw for exhibitors.
