Nina Lucille (Gunkel) Hirsch passed away peacefully May 17 at Albany Manor Foster Home in Bend. She was 97 years old.

Nina was born Dec. 6, 1920, in Coyle, Okla., to Willis and Muriel Gunkel, and was the youngest of four children. She moved with her family to Oregon and lived most of her life in Burns. She graduated from Burns Union High School in 1938 and married John Hirsch soon after. They had three children: daughter, Shirley, and sons, Roger and Lyle.

Nina enjoyed gardening, sewing, visiting with family and friends, and camping. She and John camped all the way to Alaska and back in the 1960s. They also enjoyed several bus trips, including one to Nashville.

Nina is survived by her daughter, Shirley of Bend; 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, etc.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; sons, Roger and Lyle; parents; three brothers; and one great-grandson.

A celebration of life for Nina will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at the Pavilion at Hines Park.
