Vale takes two from Burns

The Burns baseball team dropped to 5-5 in the Eastern Oregon League after losing both games in a doubleheader against Vale on Friday, May 4, at Burns High School.

The Vikings won the opener 11-3, and edged the Hilanders 8-7 in the second game.

In the first game, Vale took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, with Burns cutting the lead in half with a run in their half of the inning.

The Vikings scored a pair of runs in the fifth, and Burns answered with a single run in their half of the inning.

Vale broke the game open with four runs in the sixth, and added three more in the seventh to put the game away.

Cade Tiller pitched four and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs on one hit with nine strike outs and three walks. Luke Bailey came on in relief and surrendered four runs on five hits with one strike out. Zane Bailey pitched the final one and one-third innings, giving up four runs on four hits with one strike out and one walk.

The Hilanders had six hits, with Emil Aamodt leading the team with two RBIs.

The two teams were tied at 3-3 after two innings in the second game, and Burns then jumped out in front with a pair of runs in the fifth.

The Hilanders scored another two runs in the sixth to lead 7-3.

In the top of the seventh, Vale strung together five straight hits, including a double and a triple, and plated five runs to take an 8-7 lead.

The Hilanders were unable to score in the final at-bat, and Vale got the win.

Z. Bailey went 3-for-3 at the plate, including a double, knocked in two runs, and scored twice. Aamodt had a pair of hits and two RBIs.

Mick Winn got the start and went six innings, giving up seven runs on 10 hits with seven strike outs. Z. Bailey pitched the final inning and gave up one run on two hits, and took the loss.

Vale improved to 9-2 in the EOL with the sweep.
