(Photos by LINDY WILLIAMS) On Tuesday, Jan. 31, the Crane Mustangs girls basketball team faced the Harper Charter Hornets in Crane. The Mustangs came away with the 62-5 win. The Mustangs jumped to a 17-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. By halftime, the score was 27-4, with the Mustangs still leading. The Mustangs lengthened their lead in the third quarter, adding 27 points to the score. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the score was 54-5. Claire Hammond led the scoring charge with 22 points. Taylor Crafts and Elizabeth Jenkins both had 10 points, Dakota Perkins and Katie Burns each scored six, and Morgan Cronin and Risa Thompson each scored four. The Mustangs played the Adrian Antelopes on Thursday, Feb. 2, and the Antelopes handed the Mustangs their first league loss, 50-42. The Antelopes pulled to an early lead in the first quarter with buckets from Anna Hutchings, Shyanne Allaire, and Selina Villareal. At the end of the first quarter, Adrian led 15-7. The Antelopes continued to pull away in the second quarter, increasing their lead to 32-12 by halftime. The Mustangs gained a little ground, but it was not enough to take the lead. The third quarter ended with a 42-24 Antelope lead. The Mustangs outscored the Antelopes by 10 points in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t make up the difference. Crafts was the leading scorer for the Mustangs with 19 points. Jenkins shot for 11 points, Hammond had six, Savannah Maupin scored four, and Cronin put in two. On Saturday, Feb. 4, the Mustangs faced the Prairie City Panthers and came away with a 39-23 win. Buckets from Crafts, Hammond, Cronin, and Kaylee Carson gave the Mustangs a slight 11-7 lead. Crane pulled even further ahead in the second quarter, and held a 21-11 lead at halftime. The third quarter saw few buckets from either team, and the score was 26-15, Mustangs up, going into the fourth quarter. Crafts was the Mustangs’ leading scorer with 18 points. Cronin scored eight, Carson added six, Maupin four, and Hammond had three. ••• The Crane Mustangs varsity boys played four games last week, coming away with three wins and one loss. On Tuesday, Jan. 31, the Mustangs hosted the Harper Charter Hornets. Crane came away with the 57-22 win. The Mustangs jumped to an early 11-4 lead in the first quarter, bolstered by buckets from David Steeves and Miles Maupin. Crane continued their scoring drive into the second quarter, with Rhett Landon also adding points. At halftime, the Mustangs held a 24-11 lead. In the third quarter, the Mustangs added 12 points to their score while the Hornets added four, making the score 36-14 at the beginning of the fourth. The Mustangs added an additional 21 points in the fourth quarter, while the Hornets added seven, bringing the final score to 57-22. The Mustangs had a well-rounded scoring roster, with Steeves as the high scorer with 18 points. Maupin found the bucket for eight points, Peyton Krueger and Nathan Carson each scored seven, Landon added six, Brian Clark had five, Jesse Roozeboom scored four, and Bryce Otley had two. On Thursday, Feb. 2, the Mustangs hosted the Adrian Antelopes. Crane came away with a hard-fought win, 54-39. After a back-and-forth first quarter, the Mustangs held a slight 13-9 lead over the Antelopes. The Crane offense rolled through the second quarter and added another 24 points to their total, leaving the score at 37-21 at halftime. The Antelopes outscored the Mustangs in the third quarter, but Crane still held a 41-32 lead. The Mustangs added 13 more points to their total in the fourth quarter and Adrian added seven, leaving the score at 54-39. Maupin was the Mustangs’ leading scorer with 14 points. Chase Joyce scored 13, Landon, Steeves, and Jacob Dunn each had seven points, Carson added four, and Randy Epling had two. On Friday, Feb. 3, the Mustangs played the Huntington Locomotives in Huntington. The Mustangs came away with the 46-27 win. On Saturday, Feb. 4, Crane faced the Prairie City Panthers. The Panthers came away with a hard-fought win, 61-48. Maupin was the Mustangs’ leading scorer with 13 points. Joyce added 12, Dunn and Steeves each had seven, Landon scored four, Epling and Otley each had two, and Carson one. On Tuesday, Feb. 7, the Mustangs traveled to John Day to play Grant Union. Results were unavailable at press time. On Friday, Feb. 10, the Mustangs will travel to Adrian to take on the Antelopes once again. Varsity girls action will begin at 6 p.m. Mountain Time. There will be JV games preceding, and a boys varsity game to follow. Friday, Feb. 11, the Mustangs will take on Jordan Valley in Crane.
