Burns softball, baseball teams pick up league wins Burns Baseball Burns Softball Burns Sports Sports May 4, 2016May 4, 20160 The Hilanders’ Ally Sutcliffe led off the game with a home run, her fourth of the season, and the Hilander softball team collected 19 hits overall, as Burns defeated Irrigon 10-5 in a home league contest on Tuesday, April 26. AJ Sutcliffe hit her first home run of the season while collecting three hits and driving in four runs. Carli Feist was perfect at the plate with four hits. Sarah Blute also had three hits on the day. Shealyne Peasley added two doubles. Al. (Photo by BRIAN GRAHAM) On Saturday, April 30, Irrigon scored in every inning of the first game of the league doubleheader and defeated Burns 16-6. It was a close game until the bottom of the fourth inning when Irrigon scored six runs. The Knights scored four more in the bottom of the fifth inning to seal the game. The Hilanders collected 14 hits in the game, that included Peasley hitting her first home run of the season. Burns rebounded from the loss in the first game of the doubleheader to gain a split with Irrigon beating the Knights 15-6 in game two. Trailing 5-2 heading into the fifth inning, the Hilanders plated five runs to take the lead. Burns scored another run in the sixth, and then exploded for seven runs in the top of the seventh to coast to victory. Every member of the team collected a hit in the game with Al. Sutcliffe hitting her fifth home run of the season. Feist was perfect at the plate with four hits, including a triple, to go along with her complete game pitching victory. Cassie Patterson had three RBIs on two hits. As a team, the Hilanders had 21 hits, with seven doubles. Burns is now 13-5 overall on the season and in third place in league with a 6-3 record. Burns is ranked fifth in 2A. ••• Ty Hueckman and Justin Lewellen combined to pitch a no-hitter against Grant Union at John Day April 26, winning in six innings 10-0. Burns combined an excellent pitching performance with a strong offense as the Hilanders pounded out 12 hits with home runs from Hueckman and Ty Reid. Trace Tiller, Hueckman, and Boyd Vinson each had a double in the game as well. Reid picked up four RBIs on the day. ••• Lewellen continued his solid pitching, holding Grant Union to three hits over seven innings Saturday, April 30, striking out eight, as the Hilanders won the first game of the league doubleheader 5-1. Neither team was able to get much of an offense going on the cold, windy day, but Burns was able to push across three runs in the first inning and a single run in the fifth and sixth innings to pick up the win. Burns scored seven runs in the sixth inning to eliminate any chance of Grant Union making a late-inning comeback as the Hilanders won 10-1 and completed the weekly three-game sweep of the league opponent. Zach McDonald pitched and held the Prospectors to five hits, striking out 11, in a complete game victory. Offensively, Reid hit two doubles with three RBIs. Hueckman and Bryce Goss each hit a double with two RBIs, Lewellen connected for a triple and also had two RBIs in the game. Burns is now 9-0 in league and 15-5 overall.
