Hattie Opel Anderson 1921-2015 Obituary January 27, 2016January 27, 20160 It is with great sadness that her family announces the passing of Hattie Opel Anderson. Hattie was born in Portland, Oregon to Frank and Pearl (Dornsife) Warren on August 24, 1921. She was the 4th child of 9 children. Growing up in the 1920’s and “dirty 30’s” helped shape Hattie into the strong woman she was. When she was a student at Girls Poly in Portland, she found a passion in sewing and became a seamstress. So good in fact in her first year of college, she would make her professor’s dresses. In the early 1940’s she went to work at the Portland foundry Esco with her father, Frank, where she was a machinist. One day, a co-worker and friend of Frank’s at the foundry asked Hattie if she would write to a lonely soldier named Andy stationed in Papua New Guinea. For 2 years, Hattie wrote to Andy. Their friendly letters turned into love letters and created a bond that would not be broken. Thirteen days after Andy (Admiral Dewey Anderson) arrived by ship in the Portland, Oregon harbour, Hattie and Andy were married in Klamath Falls, Oregon on November 18, 1944. To finish out his service, Andy and Hattie moved to Yuma, Arizona. After a year and a half, they moved back to Oregon. They lived in Lakeview, Dayville, Prairie City, and their final move was to Hines in 1962. They had 3 children, Dick, Lonie and Shanon. In the 1980’s they adopted Lonie’s daughter Lori. Hattie was a friendly face for many years at the Hines Post Office and also the Lawen Post Office and made many friends. She loved to go crappie fishing with Andy and often times she was the more steady fisherman and caught the most fish. A drive in the country, over the back roads in Harney County was a delight and having a picnic in the woods was the ultimate. Knitting, crewel work, cross-stitching, and painting were hobbies that she enjoyed and perfected. Hattie lost Andy, the love of her life, in 2002. She lived alone in her home for a year and then her oldest son, Dick, and his wife, Dolores, moved across the state to be with her so she could stay in her own home. In 2004, Lonie passed away from Hepatitis C complications. Knitting had always been a fun hobby, and in her later years, Hattie made hundreds of sweaters, knitted hats (toques) and afghans. She would design her own patterns for the afghans and even learned new stitches. Hattie lost all capabilities of hobbies in October of this year when it was discovered she had a tumor in her left temple. She was visited by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Hattie passed away on Christmas morning 2015. She was honored in many households that day. It was a perfect day for her to meet The Lord. Hattie is survived by Dick (Dolores) of Hines, Oregon and Shanon of Sherwood Park, Alberta. Grandchildren Tammy, Aron (Marnie), Lori, Troy (Jaime), Cyna, Nomi (Dustin), Quinn (Mercedes) and Tanna (Darryl). Great-grandchildren Mackenzie, Philicia, Sydney, Dominic, August, Austin, Celine, Megan, Brady, Baylor, Hayley, Breanna, Brooke and Collins. Great-great grandchildren Owen, Will, Eli and Gabriel, also by her brothers Chuck and Walt (Avis), many nieces and nephews, family and friends. Hattie was predeceased by her husband Andy, son Lonie, her parents, her siblings: Leona, Viola, Leroy, Dorothy, Don and Frank. Hattie requested that no memorial service be held. Gifts in Hattie’s name and memory may be made to MS Research or the charity of your choice.
