Margaret (Peggy) Farley 1934-2019

Margaret (Peggy) Farley passed away Oct. 16 at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.

Peggy was born April 14, 1934, and was raised by her parents, William and Hazel Griffith, on a small ranch on the north end of Steens Mountain. She lived her entire life in Harney County, only rarely venturing outside of its confines. Her first school was located in the corner of a neighbor’s field. Later, she attended and graduated from Crane Union High School. After high school, she worked for a time at JC Penney in Burns. She married and had three children, Mike, Mark, and Mary. After a divorce, she raised them on a single mother’s wage while working full time at Ranch Supply in Burns. She continued working there even after she met and married Donald Farley, who preceded her in death.

Later, when the Ranch Supply closed, she worked for several years for Ruthie’s on North Broadway. She was finally able to devote full time to her hobbies of gardening and quilt-making after Ruthie downsized her business. She was very proud of her yard and received many compliments. People admired her quilts, and she donated many of them to charity.

Peggy also loved the outdoors. Well into her later years, she accompanied her family on annual hunting trips. She was also a dedicated fisherman, stopping only last year when her health no longer permitted her the walk to the lake. She regularly out-fished us all.

She is survived by her children; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She will be missed.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, in the Burns Cemetery, with a time of fellowship following the service at the Harney County Senior and Community Services Center.

Contributions in Peggy’s memory may be made to the Harney County Senior and Community Services Center, 17 S. Alder, Burns, Oregon 97720.  LaFollette’s Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
