Christmas Jamboree coming to town

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and the Harney County Chamber of Commerce is celebrating the season with a Christmas Jamboree in downtown Burns on Saturday, Dec. 8.

The events get under way with the most important meal of the day. Breakfast with Santa will be served at the Burns Elks Lodge, 118 N. Broadway Ave. in Burns, from 8-10 a.m. This is the perfect opportunity to let St. Nick know what you’re wishing for this Christmas!

After filling your belly, head downtown for some festive family fun. Vendors will be selling their wares from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Harney County Community Center, 478 N. Broadway Ave. in Burns. While you’re in the area, slide over to the adjacent chamber office to complete a craft project. If you’re in an artistic mood, you can also enter a coloring contest at the Broadway Deli, 530 N. Broadway Ave. in Burns, or craft a leather-punch key chain at Alden Leather Works, 325 N. Broadway Ave. in Burns. Craft activities will also be available at Harney County Fitness, 41 E. B St. in Burns, and the radio station, 302 S. Broadway Ave. in Burns. All of these activities will be offered between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

If you’re hoping to jazz up your holiday look, flock to Desert Dream Thrift Store, 362 N. Broadway Ave. in Burns, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for some fabulous face painting.

Are you an icing architect? Show off your confection-construction skills by entering a gingerbread house in the chamber’s annual contest. To participate in the contest, drop your cookie creations off at the chamber office, 484 N. Broadway Ave. in Burns, by 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7. Judging will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, and the winner will be announced at 3 p.m.

If staring at those sugary structures has you craving a sweet treat, you can go to The Doughnut Hole, 408 W. Monroe St. in Burns, to decorate a cookie. Decorating will take place between 10 a.m. and noon. While you’re in the neighborhood, swing by Safeway, 246 W. Monroe St. in Burns, for free samples, a Brownie Walk, and more. These activities will begin at 11 a.m. and end at 5 p.m.

Feeling photogenic? Stop by Ruthie’s In His Image Photography, 30585 Hwy. 20 E. in Burns, for a photo with Kris Kringle.

Nothing says “Christmas” like dashing through the snow in an open sleigh. Horse-drawn hayrides will depart periodically from the Arrowhead Plaza in downtown Burns from 12-2 p.m.

‘Tis the season to help those in need, so the Desert Historic Theatre, 68 N. Broadway Ave. in Burns, is hosting a canned-food drive at 2 p.m. The theatre is also showing A Christmas Carol.

A delightful parade will begin on Broadway Avenue in downtown Burns at 5 p.m. Sponsored by Umpqua Bank, the Lighted Christmas Parade is sure to brighten your mood. Anyone who’s interested in joining the parade can pick up an entry form at the chamber office.

If the winter weather has you feeling uncomfortably cold, you can warm up next to the bonfire, which will be lit in the lot across from Safeway (Monroe Street in Burns) at 5:30 p.m. While you’re there, you can admire the community Christmas tree and mingle with family, friends, and the jolly gent who makes the sleigh bells jingle!
