Chester Sater 1939-2018

Chester Perry Sater, 78, passed away May 24 in La Grande, surrounded by his family.

Chet was born Oct. 23, 1939, in Albion, Idaho, to Metta Perry and Chester Sater. He graduated from Baker High School in 1958, and attended Eastern Oregon College and Oregon State University, where he graduated with a bachelor of science degree in forestry in 1962.

Chet worked as a forester with the U.S. Forest Service for 32 years in the Payette (Yellow Pine and Council, Idaho), Toiyabe (Carson City, Nev.), Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie (Skykomish, Wash.) and the Wallowa-Whitman (La Grande) national forests. While in Nevada, he helped to build the Pacific Crest Trail in the Sierra Nevada range. He retired as a timber sales administrator in 1994.

On Feb. 1, 2002, he married Linda Iturbide (née Byassee) and expanded his loving family from two to four children. Chet was an avid and skilled hunter and fisherman. He loved to teach his grandkids to hunt and fish and appreciate the outdoors. His family is treasuring memories of many camping and river float trips, rock hunts, and perilous forest road adventures. In his retirement years, he and Linda spent their winters on the Oregon coast where Chet collected and polished beach agates, jasper, fossils, and other rocks.

Chet is survived by his wife, Linda, of La Grande; brother, Jack Sater (Arlyne) of Sun City, Ariz.; four children, Chris Sater (Marcia Walter) of Leavenworth, Wash., Chet Sater (Lisa Montgomery Sater) of Athena, Angie Iturbide Lamborn (John) of Crane, and John Iturbide (Leslie Walker Iturbide) of Island City. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Hunter and Tanner Sater, Joe, Nick, and Matt Witzel, Jordyn Baze, Shane and Brad Iturbide, and Amada Cathey; and eight great-granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his father, Chester W. Sater; step-father, John Pitman; and mother, Metta Pitman.

There will be no memorial service at Chet’s request. Please pick up and appreciate a beautiful rock or plant, a tree, or a rose to honor his memory.
