Doreen Church 1934-2017

 

Doreen Church, a long-time resident of Harney County, passed away Jan. 25 in her home at the Narrows with her family by her side.

She was born Jan. 4, 1934, in London, England. There, she enjoyed gardening, trips with family to the ocean, and worked at a floral shop.

She met Pat Church, who was there during the Korean war in Wellingborough, where they married.

Doreen and Pat moved to Harney County in 1956. She expressed much pride in becoming a U.S. citizen, learning how to drive, and finally attaining her driver’s license.

She belonged to the Harney County Extension Agency, the Eastern Star and the American Legion Auxiliary. She  also attended Saint Andrews Episcopal Church.

Her hobbies were cooking, gardening, and raising animals on the ranch at the Narrows. She loved being a good mom, preparing food and socializing, and often invited people to her home for sweet tea and her famous peanut butter mallow bars. She especially loved going to the Steens Mountain for picnics and fishing in the Blitzen River with family.

Doreen is survived by her daughter, Jackie Drinkwater, and son-in-law, Bob, of Burns; son, Dean Church of the Narrows; grandsons, Dustin of La Pine, and Taylor and Dylan Church of Burns; nephews, Lloyd and Melissa Church of Vancouver, Wash., Gary and Rhonda Shelton of Morrow, Andy and Debbie Church of Damascus, Ron and Patty Church of Gresham, and Mike and Lois Shelton of Bend.

Doreen is also survived by many relatives in England, including her three sisters, Joan, Sandra and Christine; and nephews, David and Stuart Banford.

She was preceeded in death by her husband, Pat, who passed away in 2010.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 22, at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 393 W. A street in Burns.
