HMS and CMS wrestlers compete at state

Hines Middle School (HMS) had two wrestlers place in the top five of their weight classes and finished in 12th place at the Oregon Middle School State Tournament held Saturday, March 11, in Woodburn.

The Scotties’ Garrett Goss finished fourth at 150 pounds and Justin Winn wrestled to a fifth-place finish at 95 pounds.

Crane Middle School’s Wyatt Epling placed sixth at 132 pounds, and Crane (CMS) finished tied for 53rd as a team.

There were 101 middle schools represented at the tournament which was won by Mountain View (Newberg) with 93 points. Chehalem Valley (Newberg) was second with 82.5, followed by Fremont (Roseburg) with 81, Sky View (Bend) 79.5, and Scenic (Central Point) 78 in the top five.

HMS finished with 55 points, and CMS tallied 14 points.

75 pounds — Carter Lardy (HMS) lost by fall (0:26); won by decision, 8-2; won by decision, 4-1; lost by fall (0:14).

80 pounds — Jack Roath (CMS) lost by fall (0:45); won by forfeit; lost by fall (0:19).

80 pounds — Corbett Graham (HMS) lost by decision, 6-2; lost by decision, 8-7.

95 pounds — Winn (HMS) won by forfeit; lost by fall (4:01); won by fall (0:50); won by fall (1:17); lost by fall (2:52); won by major decision, 14-6. Placed fifth.

102 pounds — Kevin Peasley (HMS) won by fall (3:58); lost by fall (1:09); won by fall (2:36); lost by decision, 8-4.

110 pounds — Cody King (HMS) won by tech fall, 18-2 (4:30); lost by decision, 4-2; won by fall (4:25); lost by fall (1:16).

132 pounds — W. Epling (CMS) won by forfeit; lost by major decision, 14-5; won by fall (4:03); won by decision, 6-5; lost by decision, 7-2; lost by decision, 17-10. Placed sixth.

150 pounds — Goss (HMS) won by fall (1:23); won by fall (1:30); lost by fall (2:32); won by tech fall, 16-1 (4:30); lost by fall (0:37). Placed fourth.

160 pounds — Dalton Puckett (HMS) lost by forfeit; lost by forfeit.

After a few years in college, he settled in Idaho for a decade, skiing, golfing, and working at Sun Valley Resort. He married in 1985, completed broadcast school, and moved to Harney County in 1989 to work for KZZR.
