Wallace Gordon Dunaway 1949-2016

Wallace Gordon Dunaway passed away Oct. 27 at the age of 67 in Sequim, Wash. His friends and family will always remember his jovial laugh, the memories of which will bring them back to his love of the outdoors and big heart for all those around him.

Wally was born March 2, 1949, to Nona and Gordon Dunaway and raised in Reedsport. Oregon life afforded the Dunaways many days spent camping at Wickiup Reservoir, sleeping under the stars, catching crawdads on Smith River, and trapping on Scholfield Creek. He learned falconry with his father and they would often go to the dunes to fly their birds. His parents knew him as a little boy with an especially tender heart for animals.

Loving wide open spaces, Wally’s youth brought him adventures surfing on the cold southern Oregon Coast and to Klamath Falls, where he studied at OTI, and then to Colorado where he studied at Trinidad College. He lived for a time in Arizona, and finally ventured to Montana where he met the love of his life, Ginger.

Wally dedicated his career to the Forest Service as an engineering technician, working in the outdoors he loved so much.  After living in Montana, they moved their family to Idanha, and finally settled in the high desert of Hines. As a father, Wally made sure his kids knew how to take care of themselves; he taught them to chop firewood, change the oil in their own cars, and to drive in the snow by spinning cookies in an empty parking lot on a plate of ice.

Perhaps most at home sitting around a good campfire, Wally was known to enjoy a shot of Jack Daniels and true to his Irish roots, never let the truth get in the way of a good story. A trained gunsmith, Wally hunted antelope, deer, waterfowl and elk. He enjoyed a number of good fishing trips, especially with his cousin, Wayne Dickson, to Mann Lake and other favorite spots. He and Ginger enjoyed many camping trips throughout Oregon.

Wally is survived by his wife, Ginger; sister, Kathy; brother, Jack; children, Betony, Charlie, Rachel and Madeleine; grandchildren, Steven, Chelsea, Bern and Fox Wallace; and numerous aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, James.

Condolences may be sent to 307 Norman St., Sequim, Wash. 98382. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
