Red Ribbon Week activities

Harney Partners for Kids & Families is teaming up with numerous community sponsors to present a Red Ribbon Week celebration Wednesday, Oct. 26, at the Harney County Fairgrounds.

red-ribbon-1Starting at 6 p.m., a free hamburger or hot dog barbecue dinner will be served in the Memorial Building.

Interactive booths will be open in the Memorial Building from 6:30-7:30 p.m. to educate the public about the dangers of using alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Children will be given cards that will be stamped as they visit each booth. Children who visit all of the booths can turn in their completed stamp cards for a grand prize. The cards will also be entered into a drawing for a chance to win an iPad mini. (Children must be present to win.)

During this time, Burns High School (BHS) fall sports athletes will discuss why they choose to abstain from using alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Members of the BHS Leadership Class will be promoting the event throughout Red Ribbon Week (Oct. 23-31).

A community bonfire will be held at the fairgrounds from 7:30-8:00 p.m., following the festivities inside the Memorial Building. This will be an opportunity for community members to connect with family and friends.

The theme of this year’s Red Ribbon Week is, “YOLO Be Drug Free.” YOLO is an acronym for, “You only live once.”

According to its website, the National Red Ribbon Campaign has touched the lives of millions of people around the world since it began in 1985.

“Today, the Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities,” the site states.
